Hi my sweet pals! I hope you are feeling very happy and excited for February. I am looking forward to Valentines Day, more running with Brian, and a visit from my parents!
I have recently been feeling confronted with the feeling that the books, readings, movies, products, and blogs that I would really love to consume possibly don't exist. How can this even be possible? We live in a time where everything exists. Brian and I get into light-hearted arguments whenever he reads about some new app or invention or innovation from Amazon that seems to be super exciting. He--being a lover of entrepreneurship and tech and stocks and that sort of thing--finds it fascinating. I, on the other hand, being a cautious spectator of Amazon and the tech boom am far from impressed. Often times these folks have created a product to solve a problem that doesn't exist because it has already been thoroughly solved. Case in point: Amazon and their freaking human-less grocery stores AND their little button to get products sent straight to your house. WHY? I still go to the grocery store. I like my local store, I love my local bakery. Why in the world would I go to a human-less grocery store for a few extra minutes of convenience? And to think of all the time that went into the development of these little ideas just to have them exposed as useless on my corner of the internet. I'm sure Jeff is sweating with nerves.
Bit of a tangent but we'll keep it moving. To be clear, that point was illustrating that I felt everything already existed. So what in the world could I seek to consume that is not already existing in gross abundance? Lol like you don't already know what I'm going to say...
GALS AND RUNNING AND CREATING
I wish I wasn't SO predictable but gosh, I am.
I am constantly seeking out books and blogs and movies or short films or tshirts or coffee mugs or magazines or hats or ANYTHING consistently created by and for women runners. It's a reason, I am realizing as I type this up, that I have such a strong love for instagram. I am able to connect with the stories of so many amazing female athletes who are sharing their stories via tiny little boxes on a big little app.
But I mean, come on. I can count the number of made by and for women running apparel companies (1- Oiselle) plus probably a million more that I just don't know about/cannot find. I went on Amazon (you're welcome for my business, Jeff) the other week to purchase some books about women runners and you know how many I bought? 4. AND THAT'S ALL I COULD FIND. There are a few short films on youtube following some incredible female mountain runners but their male counterparts far outweigh them. I feel like I confidently can say I am not the only person who shares these passions. And to be clear it is not "just running". We are talking about the intersection of feminism and environmentalism and freedom and creativity all with and through the rawest physical form of expression: sex. hehe no, running.
That may seem like a lot and could possibly be evoking a few eye rolls from anyone reading this (aka mom?) but ya can't knock it til you try it and if you've tried it then you probably just know.
So with this mounting frustration I have been feeling called to create "it" if it doesn't exist. I am not completely sure how this will look or what it will be--perhaps it will manifest itself here on this platform--but if others are also feeling this/have recommendations for their own sources of inspiration/ fave runner-gal-nerd stuff please share it!!
As always, lots and lots and lots of love from the house in ze pines!
